A Beginner’s Guide to Audio Story Writing

Everyone has a story to tell and it’s the author’s responsibility to find the best words to express those emotions. While writing a story, a writer needs to do justice not only to the readers but also to the ones whose story he or she is sharing. The story need not be about some person only, the author is free to find his muse and inspiration in anything and everything around.

Below are some pointers to keep in mind while writing audio stories:

  1. Know your subject well:

As mentioned above, you need to do justice to your subject. To write the best stories, one needs to feel the emotions of the subject, know them well, understand their views, and then present the story. With audio stories, the responsibility becomes even bigger as one needs to express the feelings and thoughts not merely through written words, but through spoken ones. Thus, a detailed study might help in producing a masterpiece!

  1. Be open to learning from others:

If you are a beginner in this field, it is always advisable to look at the work of the ones who have accomplished themselves already. If possible, try to reach out to them, and learn from them the hacks of the game. You can also look for professional courses related to audio story writing to learn. It is important to keep an open mind to absorb everything around you in the best possible manner.

  1. Listen to podcasts:

Podcasts are usually the best way to learn how to present audio stories. The spoken word differs from the written one as lot more emotions can be expressed through the former using voice tones and modulations. To become a successful storyteller, one needs to get a grasp of how to club the written words with the most suitable emotions. The more you listen, the more you will know what you want to create!

  1. Have the right set of tools:

For writing a story you might just need a pen and paper, but for an audio story, you need to have the best recorder, editing tools, and much more. Without a good recorder, you might not be able to get the voice clarity that you desire. Also, it is necessary to cut off unnecessary external sounds. For this, editing software might be of help.

  1. Find yourself a writing place:

While this might seem unnecessary to a few, this can be very important. It is essential to find a spot where you can let your ideas flow. This can be a calm place in your house or a bench in your nearby park. You need to find what works best for you! Also, for recording your audio story, try to look for a place with minimum intrusion and background noises. This will help you save the trouble of making too many edits!

  1. Work on your voice:

While this may sound weird to many, practising your voice is very important. Try recording yourself saying anything- scripted or unscripted. This will not only help you get used to using the recorder, but by listening to yourself, again and again, you will be able to know your mistakes better. Your voice is what will deliver your words to the listener, hence, it needs to be perfect!

  1. The outline is a good way to start:

Before you delve deep into writing your story, try creating a broad outline first. This can act like the boundaries or a map for you. You will know where you need to go and how you need to proceed. The outline also helps you to avoid wasting time. Creating an outline doesn’t mean that you are not allowed to explore. It simply means that you create a roadmap for yourself highlighting the main pointers you wish to cover in your stories.

  1. Create a proper script before starting the recording:

This is very important, especially when you are a beginner! If needed you can even mark the place where you need to take a pause or stop while recording. This scripting exercise will help you to avoid retakes. While being spontaneous is an art, people usually learn that with experience. Initially, going scripted is the best way. This will help you sound more confident while speaking.

  1. Never give up:

While this may sound like a piece of cliché advice, this holds specifically true when creating an audio story. Here, you might have to record and re-record every sentence ten times to get the perfect final one. In such strenuous circumstances, it looks easier to give up, but you shouldn’t! Stay on the path, and keep working on all the things mentioned above-be it finding the right object for your story, or your voice modulation. With dedicated efforts, you can surely be able to hone your skillset!

Audio story writing can be a cumbersome task initially, but with dedicated efforts, one can master the art easily. The easiest way to go from beginner to pro is to have a good guide along with you teaching you the right methods, and correcting you when required. Learning from some experts can prove to be beneficial as they know the mistakes you tend to make, and since they have been through a similar path, they can hold your hand and teach you to solve the mistakes better.
